Running a DVD Player and a VCR on One TV: Inputs, Channels, and Copy Protection

A DVD player and a VCR can live happily on the same television. The setup is not difficult, but it rewards a little planning. The goal is to give each device its own input, label those inputs, and keep the signal path as short as possible so the picture stays clean.

Start with the inputs on your TV

Modern televisions usually have two or three HDMI inputs and perhaps one composite input shared with component. Older CRT sets may have a single composite input, or only an antenna socket. Count what you have before buying cables. If the television has two HDMI ports, an HDMI DVD player and an HDMI-capable VCR are easy. If it has one composite input, you need a switch box or an AV receiver.

The simplest wiring plan

  • DVD player to HDMI 1 on the television.
  • VCR to HDMI 2, or to the composite input if it is an older model.
  • Label both inputs in the television menu as DVD and VHS.
  • Leave both devices connected and switch inputs with the remote.

This avoids unplugging anything and keeps each device independent. If the television only has one usable input, a two-way composite switch box costs very little and does the same job with one button.

Using an AV receiver as the hub

An AV receiver with multiple inputs is the cleanest solution for a mixed setup. Connect the DVD player and the VCR to the receiver, then run a single cable to the television. The receiver handles switching and can also route audio to better speakers than the television provides. Check that the receiver passes composite video through HDMI, because some models convert it and some do not.

RF modulators and channel 3

If the television has no AV input at all, an RF modulator converts composite video and stereo audio into a signal on channel 3 or 4. You then tune the television to that channel. Picture quality drops compared with direct composite, and mono modulators lose stereo, but it is a workable option for a vintage set.

Copy protection will stop most dubbing

Many people connect a DVD player to a VCR hoping to copy discs to tape. Commercial DVDs carry Macrovision analog copy protection, and most VCRs respond by recording a distorted, flickering image or refusing to record at all. This is not a fault in your cables. It is intentional. Home-made DVDs without protection may copy, but the result is still limited by VHS resolution.

Remote control conflicts

DVD players and VCRs from the same brand sometimes share remote codes. If the DVD remote pauses the VCR, look for a remote code switch in the battery compartment or a setting in the menu. Universal remotes solve the problem by assigning each device a separate mode button.

Picture settings for each device

Set the television picture mode separately for each input. A VCR looks better with reduced sharpness and a little noise reduction, while a DVD player usually looks best with sharpness near zero and noise reduction off. Save the settings per input so you are not adjusting the picture every time you switch.

Audio considerations

If the VCR is mono, the television may only produce sound from one speaker. Use the television’s mono setting or a receiver’s mono mode rather than turning the balance control, which only masks the problem. For the DVD player, set the audio output to PCM if the television has trouble with bitstream formats.

A note on tape care

VCRs pull tape past a spinning head drum, and worn belts or dirty heads will chew tapes. Clean the heads with a proper cleaning cassette, and avoid playing a tape that is already wrinkled. A damaged tape can deposit oxide on the heads and degrade every tape you play afterward.

Final thoughts

Two players, two inputs, two labels, and one remote each. That is the whole trick. If you are adding a second DVD player rather than a VCR, our guide to connecting two DVD players to one TV covers splitters and switches.
