Dialogue gets lost, music has no body, and loud scenes turn into a wall of noise. A soundbar is the simplest upgrade, and connecting one to a DVD player takes about ten minutes — provided you choose the right path and set two menus correctly.

Step One: Decide How to Route the Sound

There are three common arrangements, and they are not equally good.

Player to soundbar directly

Connect the player’s HDMI output to the soundbar’s HDMI input, then the soundbar to the TV. The player sends both picture and sound to the bar, which passes the picture through. This is the cleanest option when the bar has an HDMI input, because the player’s audio never passes through the television’s processing.

Player to TV, TV to soundbar via HDMI ARC

This is the most common setup. The player connects to the TV, and the TV sends audio back down the HDMI cable to the bar using ARC or eARC. It works well, but it depends on the television passing the format through rather than converting it.

Player to soundbar via optical or coaxial

Older bars and older players often have optical ports. This path carries standard surround formats but not the newer object-audio codecs, which a DVD cannot produce anyway. It is a solid, reliable choice.

Step Two: Match the Audio Format

Open the DVD player’s setup menu and look for the digital audio output setting. You will usually see three choices.

PCM: the player decodes everything to stereo. Safe, but you lose surround.

Bitstream / Raw: the player passes the encoded stream to the soundbar. Best when the bar can decode Dolby Digital.

Auto: the player decides. Convenient, but sometimes chooses PCM unnecessarily.

For a soundbar that lists Dolby Digital decoding, choose bitstream. If dialogue disappears or you get loud static, the bar cannot decode the stream; switch to PCM and try again.

Step Three: Set the Speaker Layout

In the player’s audio menu, tell it what you actually have. If you select “5.1” while using a two-channel bar, some players will downmix incorrectly and drop the centre channel, which is where dialogue lives. Choose stereo or 2.1 unless the bar genuinely has rear speakers.

Also set “downmix” or “dynamic range compression” to on for late-night viewing. It reduces the gap between whispers and explosions, which is exactly what a soundbar in a living room needs.

Common Problems and Fixes

Picture but no sound

Check the input on the bar, then the player’s audio setting. If you use HDMI ARC, confirm the TV’s audio output is set to the external device rather than the internal speakers.

Sound but no picture

When the player feeds the bar directly, the bar must pass video through while in standby. Enable HDMI passthrough in the bar’s settings.

Audio behind the picture

This is lip-sync error, usually caused by the television’s video processing. Use the bar’s audio delay control, or enable “auto lip-sync” if both devices support it. Our note on Bluetooth audio delay covers the wireless version of the same problem.

Only stereo from a surround disc

The player is likely set to PCM, or the disc’s audio menu is set to a stereo track. Check both.

Getting the Best From a Basic Bar

Place the bar in front of the television, not behind it, and keep it out of a closed cabinet. Raise it slightly if the TV’s feet block the drivers. Set the bar’s volume once and use the player or TV remote for daily changes.

If you later add a receiver with analog inputs, our guide to 5.1 analog outputs explains how to use the player’s multichannel jacks.

A player with clear audio menus and reliable HDMI output makes this setup painless. Browse our DVD players and choose one that gives you bitstream, PCM, and analog options without digging through a confusing menu.

A soundbar can transform DVD sound, but only if the player and the bar agree on formats.
