A portable monitor that goes dark the moment your laptop sleeps can be maddening, especially if you close the lid to save desk space. The screen is not broken and the cable is usually fine. In most cases the monitor is simply losing the power it was borrowing from the laptop’s USB-C port. Understanding that relationship makes the fix straightforward.
Why the Screen Turns Off
Most portable monitors have no battery. They draw power from the same USB-C connection that carries the video signal, a setup often called bus power. When the laptop sleeps, it cuts power to its USB ports to save energy. The monitor loses its supply and shuts down. When the laptop wakes, the monitor may come back automatically or may need to be power-cycled.
Monitors with their own power adapter or an internal battery do not behave this way. If yours does, the first question is whether the USB-C port is actually delivering power or only data.
Fix 1: Stop the Laptop From Sleeping
The simplest solution is to change the sleep behavior while you are using the second screen.
- In Windows, open Settings, then System, then Power and sleep. Set Screen and Sleep to Never while plugged in.
- In macOS, open System Settings, then Displays, then Advanced, and enable prevention of automatic sleep when the display is on, or use a utility that keeps the Mac awake.
- If you close the lid, set the laptop to “do nothing” when the lid closes and the power adapter is connected.
These changes increase energy use, so revert them when you are done.
Fix 2: Use a Powered Hub or Docking Station
A powered USB-C hub supplies the monitor from its own adapter instead of the laptop’s battery. The laptop can sleep while the screen keeps its power. This is the cleanest fix for desk setups, and it also stabilizes the video signal.
Check the hub’s power budget
Not every hub can deliver enough wattage for a monitor plus pass-through charging. Look for a hub with a dedicated power input and a stated output for downstream devices. A hub that works with a phone may not power a 15-inch panel at full brightness.
Fix 3: Choose a Monitor With Its Own Power
Some portable monitors include a battery or a separate power input. These models stay on when the laptop sleeps, which is useful for presentations, dashboards, and reference screens. The trade-off is extra weight and another cable to carry.
Fix 4: Separate Power and Video
If your monitor has both USB-C and mini-HDMI inputs, you can send video over HDMI and power the screen from a wall charger or power bank. This decouples the display from the laptop’s sleep state entirely. It is a good option for a permanent desk setup where cable clutter is acceptable.
Fix 5: Adjust USB Selective Suspend
Windows can suspend individual USB devices even when the system is awake. If your monitor flickers or drops during idle periods, this setting may be the cause.
- Open the old Control Panel power options.
- Select your plan and open advanced settings.
- Find USB settings, then USB selective suspend.
- Set it to Disabled while plugged in, then reboot.
If the problem disappears, you have found the culprit. Re-enable the setting later if you need the power savings.
Fix 6: Update Graphics Drivers and Firmware
DisplayPort over USB-C depends on cooperation between the graphics driver, the port controller, and the monitor. Outdated drivers can cause the screen to drop when the system changes power state. Install the laptop manufacturer’s latest graphics driver and check the monitor maker’s site for firmware updates.
When It Is Not a Sleep Problem
If the monitor also drops during active use, the cause may be a marginal cable, a loose port, or insufficient power. Try a certified USB-C cable rated for video and at least 60W, and test the monitor with another computer. Our guide to portable monitor power explains bus power and passthrough in more detail.
A Setup That Behaves
For a desk, use a powered hub and disable sleep while plugged in. For travel, carry a monitor with a battery or a compact power adapter. Either way, test the sleep behavior before an important meeting. Our walkthrough for setting up a portable monitor on Windows 11 covers the initial configuration step by step.
A second screen should wake with your laptop, not disappear with it. Once power and sleep settings are aligned, the monitor becomes as dependable as the built-in display.
