A standing desk is only as good as the screen setup on top of it. If the monitor stays at sitting height, you spend the standing hours looking down, and the ergonomic benefit disappears. Portable monitors are light and easy to reposition, which makes them a natural fit for a desk that moves. The challenge is keeping the screen stable, at eye level, and connected while the desk travels up and down.
Start With Eye Height
Set the desk to your standing height and sit or stand naturally. The top of the screen should be roughly at eye level, with the center slightly below. Measure the distance from the desktop to your eyes and use that as your target. Most portable monitors have a small kickstand that adds only a few inches, so you will likely need an arm or a tall stand. Keep the screen about an arm’s length away, and tilt it back slightly so your gaze meets it at a comfortable angle.
Mounting Options
A monitor arm with a VESA adapter
This is the most flexible solution. Many portable monitors have a 75 x 75 mm VESA pattern or accept an adapter plate. Choose a gas-spring or friction arm rated for the monitor’s weight, and clamp it to the desk or bolt it through a grommet. An arm lets you raise the screen for standing and pull it closer for sitting without moving the base.
A tall desk stand
If you do not want to clamp anything, a freestanding stand with height adjustment works well. Look for a wide base and rubber feet, because a light monitor on a narrow stand can wobble when the desk moves.
A laptop-plus-monitor riser
For a minimal setup, put the laptop on a riser and the portable monitor beside it at the same height. This keeps both screens aligned and leaves the desk surface clear. Just make sure the riser is stable at full standing height.

Cable Management for a Moving Desk
A standing desk moves a meter or more, and cables that are too short will either unplug themselves or pull the monitor off the desk. Leave a service loop behind the desk and use a cable tray attached to the underside. Route the video cable and power cable together, but keep them away from the motor column. If you use a laptop, consider a single USB-C cable for video and power, plus a separate power cable for the monitor. Use velcro ties rather than zip ties so you can adjust the loop later.
Power and Connectivity
Mount a power strip to the underside of the desk so the whole setup moves as one unit. That way you never unplug the monitor when you raise the desk. Check that the strip’s cable reaches the wall outlet at the highest desk position with slack to spare. If the monitor supports power delivery passthrough, confirm the charger is rated for both the monitor and the laptop. A 65 W charger is a sensible minimum for a laptop plus a 15-inch panel.
Layout Ideas
The simplest ergonomic layout is the portable monitor directly in front of you and the laptop off to one side, angled inward. If you prefer the laptop keyboard, put the portable monitor above it on an arm and use an external keyboard at desk height. A vertical secondary screen works well for chat, email, or reference material, but keep the main screen horizontal for video and spreadsheets. Leave space between the screens so you can turn your head rather than twist your neck.
Lighting and Comfort
Standing desks often face a window, which creates glare on a glossy panel. Angle the screen away from the light or add a matte screen protector. Set brightness to match the room rather than maxing it out, and take breaks to look at something distant. Our guide to reducing eye strain with a portable monitor has more detail on brightness and positioning.
Stand, Sit, Repeat
The best standing desk setup is the one you can change in seconds. Mount the monitor at eye level, leave slack in the cables, and keep power on the desk. With a stable arm and a tidy cable loop, the screen follows you from sitting to standing without a single adjustment, which is exactly the point.
